Open Day at the SPring-8 Campus

RIKEN and the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) hosted SPring-8's 18th Open Day on April 29, 2010. Our theme this year was 'Explore and Discover: Cutting-edge Science!'. We were blessed with good weather this year and 4,281 people came to see what SPring-8 is all about. Needless to say, the main events in the experimental hall were very popular, as was the craft activity at the Structural Biology Facility. Visitors were also very keen to take advantage of the chance to use the huge electron microscope and take a picture. In addition to all of that, the X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility was open to the public again this year and we had 3,019 visitors-perhaps they have all been dreaming about the X-ray laser that we hope to beam into space by next April!

Thank you very much to all who came to our Open Day.

We had wonderful weather!
Events inside the Storage Ring.
The Central Control Room. This is where our huge facility is controlled from.

"Nyan-hakase", SPring-8's idol.
The 'Cat chasing light' event. The participants' eyes are glued to the cat's every move.
Habatan was with us again this year.

Learning about electrons and light. This event was easy to understand and much enjoyed.
Working hard to collect static electricity!
Using surveying tools to see the other end of the very long XFEL Facility.

The almost-complete XFEL Facility.
The beautifully arranged accelerating tubes were not here last year.
Have you downloaded the free Radiation 2D Simulator?

The toughie radish, Dai-chan, is participating with the other children.
What's going to happen next?
SPring-8's Experimental Hall, which is not usually open to the public.

You can enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Please come back next year!
