Expertise :

After his physics studies at ETH Zurich, Joël Mesot performed his PhD at the Institute Laue Langevin, France, in the field of solid state physics using neutron scattering. Following a first stay at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) where he built the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer FOCUS, he spent several years at Argonne National Laboratory, USA, where he specialized in synchrotron techniques, mainly angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. He returned to Switzerland in 1999 and took over the lead of the Laboratory for neutron scattering at ETH Zurich and PSI. Since 2008 he is director of PSI, the largest publicly funded research institute for natural sciences and engineering in Switzerland and Professor at ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne. Since July 2010, he is member of the ETH Board. PSI is currently running, on a single site synchrotron, neutron, as well as a muon sources. The SwissFEL project, a free electron laser in the X-ray regime, is currently under construction and first users are expected in 2017.
