An extremely thermophilic bacterium, Thermus thermophilus HB8, is a promising model organism for the structural and functional studies. First, despite of the small genome size, this organism contains the ‘minimal: set of genes required for free-living cellular life. Second, the genetic tool for functional analysis is available. Third, its proteins are highly stable. This research team aims to reveal the functional information of T. thermophilus HB8 on a genome-wide scale by analyzing mRNA expression (transcriptomics), protein expression (proteomics) and metabolite dynamics (metabolomics).
